King's Mountain National Military Park
In a special visit to York County on October 7, 1930, U.S. President Herbert Hoover declared the battlefield at Kings Mountain to be "a place of inspiring memories." It is the place that changed the course of history for South Carolina and the United States. The Chronicle Maker at Kings Mountain National Military Park is the second oldest battlefield monument (1815) in the United States.
The park preserves the entire battlefield site in a natural setting evocative of the Carolina frontier of 1780 which commemorates one of the most important Patriot victories of the American Revolution and the first major Patriot victory of the Southern Campaign.
The park includes a 1.5 mile battlefield trail that is a walking-only trail, a film presentation, and museum exhibit are with battlefield artifacts, a gift shop and bookstore and hiking trail. There is a back country campsite approximately three miles from the visitor center, and horse trails are also available for visitors who bring their own horses.
